Great post Mike. I love how the free market types never want to talk about the ROI of think tanks.

Every year they go back to their donors asking for more because they didn't earn any money the year before. In San Francisco we expect out Art's groups to at least TRY to make money.

It would be fun to ask them a few questions.
"How much money did you make from people buying your reports? How much money did you make from people attending your conferences. How much money did the tv and radio stations for being their "expert" on a topic? Could the money you raised from selling actual products and expertise pay all your salaries? "

Because they don't make enough money to pay for their people they are in the red every single year. They are not self supporting. Each year they have to beg for money. That doesn't sound like a company who believes in capitalism. Wouldn't in a strictly capitalist system companies who don't earn a profit go out of business?

(I realize that my argument can be rebutted with comments about the ROI that they deliver their donors, but that would force them to admit that they are a money losing operation and that the funders expect to get their ROI by long term idea fixing or changing. Ideas like, "Taxes are always bad. Government health care will be terrible. No Regulation, ever. Global Warming is a Hoax, etc.")
