We can do better than this
So on last night’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann, Professor Jack Levin suggests there’s a rabid form of antisemitism growing on the left. “Progressives that blame Jews all over the world…” are attacking Jews for Israeli policies.
Levin doesn’t tell us about all the synagogues and yeshivas progressives have blown up… He doesn’t cite any left-leaning bloggers or activists that traffic in hate-speech and racial slurs.
Ugh. False equivalency on Keith Olbermann’s show. Disgusting.
Of course Israel is criticized for its anti-peace and cruel policies. That’s a far cry from hate speech and it most assuredly is not “anti-semitism”
Next, Keith asks what would have happened if the nut that shot up the holocaust museum had been Arab. Levin begins his answer by saying that there are Arabs that are doing well in this country. I thought for sure that he was going to go on to say that Arabs may be scapegoated and targeted for violent acts by cretins driven by nationalistic or racial sentiments. Instead Levin suggested that Arabs may turn to terrorism if Americans demonize them.
Earth to Levin: Arabs have been demonized in this country at least since 1979 when Iran took Americans hostage for 444 days. Since then we’ve blown up one of Qadaffi’s kids, played Iran and Iraq against each other for a decade-long war in which millions died, abandoned Afghanistan after they won a proxy war against the USSR for us, invaded Afghanistan, invaded Iraq twice, bombed a Somali aspirin factory, and stood ever closer to Israel even as they violated human rights treaties and turned to cruelty in their dealings with Palestinians. All along, the media has portrayed Muslims as sub-human curiosities prone to doing weird things with their shoes and training their kids to be suicide bombers.
I’m not even going to get into the Muslim round-ups after 9/11. I won’t mention the American Muslim citizens we kidnapped and sent to Egypt for torture. I’ll skip over Abu Grahb, Bagram and Gitmo.
The point is this: if American Arabs were going to be radicalized because of the way we treat them, it probably would have happened already.
My opinion? Muslims in America are much more likely to be victims of terrorism than they are to be perpetrators. I’ve got an email in Professor Levin’s mailbox asking him some of these questions.
In the meantime, if you are looking for information on hate, you can’t do much better than David Neiwert.
